Adult learning is not only absorbing knowledge, but also having the willingness to pursue knowledge for its own sake. For this purpose, a university teacher must find new ways to help students enjoy learning. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce one approach to help students become autonomous learners in a reading course utilizing daily newspapers. Reading a Japanese newspaper is routine for many adults, but reading an English newspaper may be difficult for many adult language learners, especially freshmen at university. However, if teachers let students select their favorite topics they can enjoy reading and share their ideas of what they have read, most students will find enjoyment in learning English. University students generally have the potential to analyze social issues. They have curiosity to know new things as well. If they are given an opportunity to choose one topic from a news article they have read and to research it, they will learn how to express their own opinions to social issues in English. Ikeda and Lummis (2002) created the reference book "If There Were 100 People in a Global Village" based upon the report, "State of the Village Report" (Meadows, 1990). This reference book includes the information of the world population, religions, food, energy, war, etc. Therefore, students will use it as a handbook for students' research. The presenter will introduce this reference book and show how to use it in concert with daily newspapers to heighten students' awareness about peoples and cultures of the world.
