Spas and hot springs in northern Thailand were examined based on the field survey whether they can become attractive tourist attractions for tourism promotion between Japan and Thailand. There are many Japanese who regard a hot spring as a spa (resort). However, in Thailand, the concepts of a spa and a hot spring differ consider-ably. The spa in Thailand does not have an image of the hot spring which Japanese consider. It is not the place of bathing but the place of health care and esthetic. Spa service programs and facilities are enough to attract many Japanese tourists. Although the hot spring in northern Thailand is natural beauty, it is now difficult to attract them as a place of bathing. In concluding, it seems that they, especially, spas contribute to tourism promotion between Japan and Thailand.
