In this article, I would try to elucidate the function of human imagination in epistemology. In general usage of the term "imagination", most people think it is a kind of power for an artistic performance or a moral sense. On the other hand, beyond the importance in general usage or meaning, imagination has important functions in epistemology. It will become clear in modern philosophers' argument, in theory of knowledge or judgment of David Hume, Jean-Paul Sartre and Immanuel Kant. Especially in Kant's account of imagination, I claim that its productive and schematizing functions are essential for human knowledge in tense (past, present and future) cognition. In other words, all cognition occurs in time and thus is subject to the structure of temporality. Yet there is a limit in Kantian theory. Whether we can obtain a richer view beyond Kant or not depends on how we can solve the problem with dualism in epistemology.
