The reduction mechanism of cutting forces in the cutting with built-up edge (BUE) is investigated by carrying out the orthogonal cutting tests for the aluminum alloy. The behaviors of cutting forces in the cutting with BUE are compared with those in the cutting with rake face length restricted. It is found that the remarkable decrease of cutting forces is caused by not only the well-known increase of effective rake angle of BUE but also by the effect of restricting tool-chip contact length.
