Chokkomon design is a design of intersecting straight and curved lines found in the Kofun period. The materials introduced here are two fragments of sword accouterments excavated from the Funazaka burial mound in Ibaraki prefecture. One is made of deer antler and the other of wood. The composition of the incised chokkomon design on these materials is so simplified that it seems difficult to identify it as an existing type. However, it is possible to see it not simply as a crude design, but rather as an example that can be cited as the final phase of chokkomon design, when chokkomon design was losing its original composition. Fully aware of the necessity of exhaustive observation, this paper focuses especially on the form and designs of the deer antler sword hilt and the wooden scabbard opening accouterments. In particular, observations will focus on traces of implements and composition of designs, suggesting the possibility of revealing the use of patterning techniques. In so doing, with a broad comprehension of the nature of the patterns, basic information will be provided for the understanding of sword accouterments and research of chokkomon design.
