This study investigated whether or not the formation of interactive reading conception, or an awareness of assuming the reading process as interactive, facilitates non-proficient L2 reading performance. An experiment was conducted as a relatively long-term educational study, and the participants were non-proficient EFL students in an upper secondary school in Japan. This study concluded that the formation of interactive reading conception facilitates non-proficient L2 reading comprehension and strategy use, and that there is an important association between interactive reading conception and interactive reading performance. Thus it is pedagogically important for beginning and non-proficient L2 readers to develop interactive reading conception in the course of learning to read.
