While a substantial body of research has demonstrated the crucial role of noticing in SLA, how noticing is implicated in L2 writing processes remains an important issue to be investigated. This paper analyzes data taken from a larger study which investigated learner noticing and the role of native-speaker models in a four-stage writing task consisting of output, comparison, and two revisions. It focuses on one specific finding pertaining to the potential role of models vis-a-vis what may be termed 'covert' features. In the study, participants noticed a number of linguistic problems as they wrote a story in response to a picture prompt, but gave up dealing with some of them in their output, resulting in partial or total avoidance. These problems may be described as 'covert' problems because they do not surface in the learners' texts. However, through two models presented later, the participants were able to notice solutions to some of the covert problems and to incorporate them in their revisions. These results suggest that a unique role may be recognized for the noticing function of models as a feedback tool.
