The present ERP results reveal that both contextual information and discourse markers (i.e., topic-markers) are used on-line to decode information status (New or Given) of a noun phrase in Japanese. An N400 effect reflects the primary encoding of New/Given status of a noun phrase and a P600 effect is modulated by topic-licensing of a noun phrase, These results speak for a discourse based account of on-line processing of Japanese sentences.
