Two experiments are presented in this study. The first experiment, wherein asked subjects were asked to do a cross-modal picture-nonword interference task, showed that phonologically-related distracters facilitated only written output but not spoken output of non-native writers in Japanese (NNWs). On the contrary, no difference was found in both written and spoken output of native writers in Japanese (NWs). The second experiment, wherein subjects were asked to write a short sentence under suppression conditions (articulatory, and visuo-spatial), revealed that NNWs needed to apply not only the phonological loop but also the visuo-spatial sketchpad when they are writing a Japanese sentence. These findings imply that it is important to realize not only the importance of linguistic information (i.e, grammar), rules of text form, and spelling, but also the possibility of applying phonological information in second language writing classes.
