We compared the ratios of M170 of Picture fonts, Hangeul characters, Pseudo Kanji, and Illegal Kanji to Real Kanji in adult learners of Japanese from five groups (Non-Kanji Beginning, Non-Kanji Intermediate, Non-Kanji Advanced, Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean, and native speakers of Japanese. In Non-Kanji Beginning, there was no significant difference in five stimuli, whereas, in the other groups, Picture font was significantly smaller than Real Kanji. This finding suggests that with learning Kanji, Kanji is neurologically differentiated from Picture as linguistic symbols. In adults, this neurological change occurs between 6-18 months after staring of learning Japanese.
