Time-dependent multidimensional solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations were used to study the processes leading to the transition from a deflagration to a detonation in an energetic reactive gas mixture. This paper describes selected phe- nomena observed in the simulations and relates these to the development of hot spots (ignition centers) and spontaneous reaction waves arising in gradients of reactivity.
