Recent advances in wired and wireless technologies, coupled with increases in hardware capabilities have led to a vertiginous growth in multimedia sharing applications. These applications can be of a sensitive nature, and thus need to be protected against malicious observers. This paper presents the state-of-the-art and current trends in cryptographic techniques. Several symmetric key techniques, such as block cipher, stream cipher, etc. are presented and analyzed against known attacks, such as the traditional known/chosen-plaintext and known-ciphertext at-tacks, and the more recent algebraic attacks, which exploit the algebraic structure of the encryption algorithms. Then a survey of different systems designed for the specific task of protecting multimedia applications is presented. Video, image and speech data have traditionally being protected using typical encryption techniques, without observing the inherent structures, syntax, and characteristics of the data. Current methods discussed in the paper not only utilize these structures, but many times are jointly designed with or embedded in the compression modules of the coding algorithms. Finally, existing challenges are summarized and new research directions are described.
