It has been reported that a electromyographic examination of lumbodorsal muscles is useful in lumbar diseases. Although such reports refer to the usefulness of the examination, they fail to point out the basis of their method. Such studies are very vague and only empirical, e.g. the position and depth of insertion of the needle electrode are not uniform. Therefore, the author performed postmortem examinations and confirmed that the deep layer of multifiundus muscle is most appropriate for electromyography, judging from the process of the posterior branch of the lumbar nerve and its position with respect to the denervated muscle. Then, the auther devised a radiographic technique for introducing an exact portion of needle insertion for electromyography and demonstrated that this technique has reasonable and reproducibility. The discharged waves were expressed as the integration and the number of spikes per unit time. After reference to positive findings, the technique was applied to clinical cases. The technique devised by the author was found to be useful in clinical cases. This also could be applied to making the diagnosis and differentiation of lumbar pain.
