A newt system using Tylototriton verrucosus Anderson imported from Burma was introduced for teratogenicity test of some antipyretics. Two couples of this species delivered about 4000 fertilized eggs per year. A high incidence of structural abnormalities was induced in hind-limbs when 1μg/g body weight of AF 2, 0.02μg/g body weight of DMBA, 0.4mg/g body weight of acetyl salicylate, 0.1mg/g body weight of phenacetin and acetaminophen was injected intra peritoneally on day 6 after amputation. Histological studies showed necrosis of blastema cells after AF2 and DMBA treatment. The antipyretics induced chromosomal aberrations in rat bone marrow cells. These fIndings suggested that the chemicals were cytocidal to blastema cells leading to abnormal regeneration. The teratogen screening by this "extrauterine" system has several merits : (1) the animals have powerful reproductivity, growth and regeneration ; (2) toe structure resembles that of human hands ; (3) target of observation is limited to one organ ; (4) active 5-9 fraction is present as in mammals.
