In the synovial tissue of rheumatoid arthritis, the follicle-like accumulations of lymphocytes are sometimes seen. One is the follicle-like accumulation chiefly consisted of (small) lymphocytes. Other is the follicle-like accumulation surrounded by plasma cells. However, the characterization and subpopulation of these lymphocytes have not yet been confirmed. We examined to make clear of the characterization and subpopulation of these lymphocytes by using immunofluorescent antibody technipue, E cell binding response to T lymphocyte, and EAC cell binding response to B lymphocyte on tissue sections. Though still some technical problems exist, following could be said. 1) In the follicle-like accumulation chiefly consisted of (small) lymphocytes, E positive cells (lymphocyte binding to E cell) occupied most of the accumulation, but EAC positive cells (lymphocyte binding to EAC cell) were little except around vessels and around the follicles. 2) In the follicle-like accumulation surrounded by plasma cells, three cases were seen. (a) One case, E positive cells and EAC positive cells were both mingled. (b) Another case, E positive cells almost. (c) last, neitherE nor EAC positive cells were seen. 3) On the immunofluorescent findings, plasma cells around lymphocytes contained IgG. Macrophages contained IgM. On these results, we suggest that T and B cell interactions occur and B cells develop to plasma cells and produce immunoglobulin locally in the follicle-like accumulation.
