Effects of sodium depletion on blood pressure, sodium content of cardiovascular tissue, and vascular response to norepinephrine using isolated hindquarter preparation, were observed in 6-week-old SHR and normotensive Wistar rat. 2 weeks sodium restriction lowered blood pressure of SHR but not to the normotensive level, and high sodium content of cardiovascular tissue in SHR decreased to the level of normotensive Wistar rat. In normotensive Wistar rat neither blood pressure nor sodium content of cardiovascular tissue was affected by the sodium depletion. In isolated perfused hindguarter preparation, SHR showed higher response to norepinephrine as compared with normotensive Wistar rat on normal sodium diet. Sodium depletion produced a slight decrease in vascular response of SHR, but failed to normalized the hyperresponsiveness. These results suggest that the higher vascular response to norepinephrine in SHR is not only due to accumulation of sodium in vascular tissue, but also to the other genetic properties of the vascular walls.
