The purpose of this paper is to make clear the feature of SHIGEMATSU's "Study of Graded Development". SHIGEMATSU ( 1908-1995) was an eminent scholar of "Analysis of class work". Excepting it, he wrote some papers called "Study of Graded Development" by his followers. I would like to emphasize that SHIGEMATSU didn't define "Graded Development" and he didn't write any papers as "Study of Graded Development". Certainly all papers on "Graded Development" had a same feature in that child-features were described by grade. But it is difficult to suppose that SHIGEMATSU had a consistent purpose and method of "Study of Graded Development". We need to reread them more carefully in his context First I considered eight papers on "Graded Development" in this paper and found out as follows. The purpose of "Study of Graded Development'" was classified under three types: to show the base of curriculum, to describe the aim of primary school concretely, and to show a view of the world" of the children. The method of "Study of Graded Development" was classified under two types: one way to collect the cases which each teacher noted down, another to collect by "Analysis of class work". Secondly I overviewed SHIGEMATSU's study life, I found out that his main concern was evaluation of schooling system and "evaluation" of each pupil, and he maintained "Analysis of class work" not only itself but also as the method of "Study of Graded Development". In concluding, I should note that SHIGEMATSU's purpose of "Study of Graded Development" was evaluation of schooling system and the method of study was the same as "Analysis of class work".
