In OE the verbal prefix to-has the meaning of 'asunder, in pieces, separation' or the literal meaning of the adverbial particle to "towards". The prefix to-combines with certain verbs and forms compound verbs. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), over 120 compound verbs wich take the prefix to-with the meaning of "separation" are recorded in OE. Many of them rapidly disappears in ME and only a few are found after 1500. There are few examples of such compound verbs in Mod. E. In this paper we deal with the classification of the prefix to-according to Hall (1960), OED, and Niwa (1991), and we will examine how the verbal prefix to-declines from OE to early ME, using the Helsinki Corpus.
