English students at universities, nursing colleges and a vocational school were surveyed in order to elicit their attitudes toward studying English, with a view to planning appropriate policies. The survey results reveal a general profile of English students : Despite many years of studying English, more than 750/0 of students rate their own speaking ability at lower intermediate or lower. A majority of students (75010) are, at best only a little interested in studying English, while most students (75010) , study English in order to enhance their leisure activities and have little or no use for English in their daily lives. Many students (66010) think that they will sometimes need to use English at work, and conversation is seen as the most important skill. Most students (81010) think that English should be included in university entrance exams, but once having entered college, more than one - third would not study English if given the choice. A significant number of students showed an interest in studying other languages. These findings could be used as a basis from which to review current policies.Possible changes may include reducing class sizes, and offering elective English classes with a wider range of situation - specific curricula, as well as offering a wider choice of languages.
