Red cell superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activities and plasma lipoperoxide levels were measured in newborn infants in relation to defense mechanism to photoirradiation and oxygen toxicity.1. Red cell SOD and CAT activities in normal mature and premature infants showed significantly lower levels than those in adults. Red cell GSH-PX activities in newborn infants were equal to those in adults. SOD activities in small for date infants showed relatively high levels for only first three days after birth. 2. Red cell SOD activities in respiratory distress syndrome infants showed significantly elevated levels in comparison with those in premature infants without respiratory distress. 3. In respiratory distress syndrome infants, red cell SOD activities in infants who did not develope bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and/or retrolental fibroplasia (RLF) elevated day by day after birth, but those in infants who developed BPD and/or RLF did not elevate in early neonatal period. 4. During phototherapy, red cell SOD activities elevated and plasma lipoperoxide levels decreased. These results suggest that antioxidant defense mechanism against oxygen toxicity and photoirradiation exists at brith even in premature infants.
