• In this paper I described the basic phonology of Standard Chinese (usually called Mandarin), and compared it with Japanese sounds. I then discussed the difficult sounds for Chinese speakers studying Japanese, based on the contrastive study of the sounds of both languages. I also gave minimal pairs and other practices to overcome these difficulties. I finally made two sample tests of aural perception: a test of Japanese difficult sounds for Chinese speakers, and a test of Chinese difficult sounds for Japanese speakers.
