Recently, hypoxia in tissues has been attracting attention as a causative factor in the onset of microangiopathies in diabetes mellitus. As one of the factors involved in the onset of hypoxia in diabetic tissues the changes of erythrocyte deformability, HbAI, osmotic fragility of erythrocytes, erythrocyte viscosity, ATP and 2,3-DPG were determined and the hemorrheological analysis in diabetes mellitus was discussed. The conclusions were summarized as follows ; 1) An improved method on the Reid's filtration technique for the determination of erythrocyte deformability was applied in this study. 2) Erythrocyte deformability was decreased in diabetic patients. A further decline was observed in a group of diabetic patients with severe complications. 3) In proportion to the grade of diabetic complications, HbAI increased and osmotic fragility of erythrocytes represented a significant shift to the hypotonic side. Significant negative correlations were noted between erythrocyte deforIIiability and HbAI or osmotic fragility of erythrocytes, these factors seemed to be the causative factors in the decline of erythrocyte deformability. 4) There were no significant difference in the erythrocyte viscosity between normal subjects and diabetic patients. 5) A significant decline of 2,3-DPG in erythrocyte was found, but erythrocyte ATP increased in diabetic patients with severe complications. 6) It appeared that anti-sickling agents such as pyridoxal phosphate and glyceraldehyde make erythrocyte improved. 7) Erythrocyte deformability, HbAI, osmotic fragility of erythrocytes, erythrocyte viscosity, ATP and 2,3-DPG seem to be the causative factors affected considerably on the onset of tissues hypoxia in diabetic patients.
