<Objective and Method> In order to analyze the secretion of glucagon in juvenile onset diabetes(JOD), blood glucose(BG) levels in the morning fasting state, at insulin loading and at arginine loading and blood glucagon (immunoreactive glucagon, IRG) levels were determined. <Results> i) In the JOD group, in the morning fasting state, both BG and IRG levels were significantly higher than normal values, and a positive correlation was found between the two. ii) In the JOD group, IRG decreased in parallel with BG after continuous drip infusion of small doses of insulin, and a positive correlation was found between △BG and △IRG when their respective pretreatment values were taken as 0. iii) In ATT, regardless of the concomitant use of continuous drip infusion of small doses of small doses of insulin, the JOD group showed a significantly higher secretion of IRG than the normal group. iv) In response to hypoglycemia in the insulin tolerance test ITT), the control group showed a significant increase in blood IRG, while the JOD group showed no appreciable response. <Conclusion> Secretion of glucagon in JOD showed specific responses : i. e. hypersecretion in the hyperglycemic state and hyposecretion in the hypoglycemic state, and an exaggerated response to arginine was elicited Damage to the α-cells in the pancreas or the existence of glucagon secretory cells was assumed to be responsible for these phenomena.
