Over 400 nuclear tests were carried out at Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site(SNTS) of Kazakhstan from 1949 to 1989, and 1.5 million people including those from East Kazakhstan and Pavlodar regions of Kazakhstan and Altai region of Russia were repeatedly exposed to ionizing radiation. The tests conducted in 1949 and 1953, with the respective yields of 22 Kt and 400 Kt, are considered to have contributed most to the population dose. The external doses estimated from the brick measurements were up to 1 Gy for residents near SNTS, which was remarkably high compared with the previously reported values based on military data. Many studies have documented the increased risk of cancers related to radiation, and breast is one of the well-known radiosensitive organs. Increased relative risk for breast cancer was found in atomic bomb survivors. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the risk of breast cancer by radiation exposure caused by a series of nuclear weapon tests at SNTS.
