The energy metabolism of the rat kidneys in acute pancreatitis was examined from the point of view of the mitochondrial functions. A decrease in ATP contents was observed in 6 hrs. after the onset of acute pancreatitis. The activities of both NADH-cyt. c reductase and succinate-cyt. c reductase declined in 6 hrs. No changes were, however, observed in contents of cytochrome c+c_1 and a (+a_3). As identical results were obtained from the another experiments with injection of pancreatic homogenate intravenously, it was considered that the pancreatic enzymes which have entered into the blood stream would disturb the mitochondrial function following the reduction of the energy production in the renal cortex. Furthermore, the reduced Na-K ATPase activity and obstacle of the electron transport system in 48 hrs. should suggest that the kidneys were in the preparative conditions falled into the acute renal failure in acute pancreatitis.
