Model-based damage identification methods often face such challenge as absence of the information in intact or so-called baseline structure, exhausting task of model construction and difficulty or sometimes impossibility of bridging the gap between real and simulated structure. Non-baseline techniques, however, slide over these problems and have the potential of being a more efficient and practical alternative for near-real time and on-line structural health monitoring. In this regards, a novel non-baseline damage location method is presented by direct use of distributed macro-strain time-series measurements. Based on experimental modal analysis, modal macro-strain vector (MMSV), which has been proved to have a mapping relation with displacement mode shape, can be extracted to provide an indicator to damage location. Numerical example of a cantilevered beam has verified that the modal macro-strain vector is sensitive to damage even in the case of 10% stiffness reduction and available for different damage scenarios. Furthermore, comparison of the influence of noise on dynamic macro-strain and acceleration measurements for damage location shows the robustness of the proposed method.
