Charged colloidal particles are spontaneously organized into three-dimensional periodic arrays in a liquid medium. This ordered state is called the colloidal crystal, and has received considerable attention with respect to the possible application, particularly as photonic crystals. Although polycrystalline samples are easily prepared, producing large single-crystalline domains that are crucial for advanced studies remains time-consuming and difficult. In this paper, we report a very practical method for fabricating centimeter-sized uniform colloidal crystals with high spectral quality by a shear-induced method; i.e., a charge-stabilized colloidal suspension is run in a flat capillary driven by a pressure-regulated air pulse. Above a critical pressure, the entire capillary was filled with a uniform single-domain texture whose transmittance spectrum showed a high quality as a photonic crystal. Their spectral quality characterized by various methods will be demonstrated.
