An attempt to control the force exerted by a fluid and the vortex shedding process by utilizing the receptivity of a roughness element (i.e. one kind of tripping wire) on a circular cylinder to the external acoustic disturbance was carried out. The mean pressure field on the cylinder surface and the velocity field vicinity of the cylinder are investigated. When the roughness element is installed, the separated shear layer becomes more receptive to the acoustic disturbance. Therefore, the mean drag force is reduced and the velocity defect area expands toward the downstream.
