High temperature air jet flows are used widely in the fields of heating, drying, powder treatment and others. However, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of high temperature air jet flow have not been sufficiently clarified yet. The main purpose of this study is to clarify the flow and heat transfer of high temperature air jet flow and to improve the performance of a surface fusing, or globular forming system of fine thermoplastic fine particles. First, the velocity and thermal characteristic of high temperature air jet flow from the around-nozzle [Fig.1(a)] and the new three-concentric-nozzle [Fig.1(b)] system and the relation between the heat transfer rate from high temperature air jet flow to fine particles and globular forming characteristics are clarified experimentally. Next, globular forming characteristics and the effect of nozzle shape on the performance of globular forming are examined. As the result, the new three-concentric-nozzle system has a higher performance: approximately 5.4 times greater energy efficiency compared with the around-nozzle system.
