This paper presents the surface damage and the formation of cracks in indented ceramic materials under quasi-static loading. There different materials, Al2O3, Si3N4 and SiC were prepared for specimens, and their polished surfaces of the sample were indented with a round diamond indenter. After indentation, length, depth and number of cracks were measured and the results were analyzed and discussed. It was concluded from the present experiments that the regular pattern of the occurrence and development of crack length and depth obeys the weibull's distribution. In this paper we use the depth and diameter of an indentation to represent the influence of loading on the indentation shapes. The mean crack length around an indentation can be estimated with the experimental formula.
