The purpose of this paper is to consider feminist women's philosophy of love and marriage and its relevance to a certain images of gender and sexuality which served as ideal and norm in Taisyo period. The materials to be analyzed here come from the debates by the "New-Women" or "Atarasii-onna" in the 1910s, namely "the chastity debates" from 1914 to 1916, the "abortion and birth control debates", the "debates about abolition of public prostitution" from 1915 to 1917, and the "national maternity service debates" from 1915 and 1919, and these are supplemented by review articles and essays written by them in the 1910s and 1920s. In these debates, the "New-Women" discussed sexuality, reproductive health/rights, maternity/motherhood, and love. By adopting discourse analysis, this paper shows that the "New Women" praised "ren'ai kekkonn" or "love marriage" as a form of women's liberation from conventional Japanese patriarchal norm and as an actualization of equal partnership based on free choice. It will then be discussed that the "New Women" positively presented love or romantic love in order to legitimize a certain form of gender and sexuality which they advocated, and in so doing, they excluded the form of women's life that do not fit into their image of the emancipated women. The "New-Women", in other words, considered marriage, sexual relation, and reproduction which are not based on love as inauthentic. This paper also argues that their discourse which connected love marriage and women's liberation was in fact a serving for building of the nation and society, and that there existed a symbiotic relationship between the nation building and the "love marriage" ideology in constructing a gender/sexuality norm.
