This paper presents the expansion of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 transform block size. The AVC/H.264 video coding scheme is the most efficient at present, and is widely used in various applications ranging from low resolution video such as QVGA size of mobile broadcasting to high resolution like digital cinema. The ultrahigh-definition video system has video signal with stronger positive autocorrelation than HDTV, therefore a large block size would be suitable for the orthogonal transform in the video coding algorithm. In this paper, we add the 16×16 block size transform to AVC/H.264 for utilization in the ultrahigh-definition video system. The departure from the AVC/H.264 standard is reduced to a minimum and the performance of the expansion is evaluated using ultrahigh-definition video signals.
