In recent years, systems that allow users to see and touch virtual objects in the same space are being investigated. We refer to these systems as visuo-haptic mixed reality (VHMR) systems. Most research projects are employing a half-mirror, while few use a video seethrough, head-mounted display (HMD). We have developed an HMD-based, VHMR painting application, which introduces new interaction techniques that could not be implemented with a half-mirror display. We present a user study to discuss its benefits and limitations. While we could not solve all technical problems, our work can serve as an important fundament for future research.
