I look back my clay science researches for forty years. Most of them are concerned with crystal chemistry of the clay mineral. The history of my research begins with the measurement of the particles size of allophane, and followed with the research of stacking of clay mineral, the simulation of the XRD line profile and the expansion mechanism. There is a general idea shown with two keywords in base of the research. They are the term of "particle size" and "layer charge" The term of "particle size" correlates with the disorder of the structure of crystals deeply, and indicates the nature of the clay mineral. The term of "layer charge" is the major fact of the expansion mechanism which is important characteristic of the clay mineral In order to do research, the analytical program of the interstratified structure and the relative humidity control system for the X-ray diffraction are newly developed. And also, I realize that we have to tell the history of clay science for the next generation.
