Bone age assessment has been widely used in pediatric radiology to identify endocrine problems in children. Because the number of trained doctors does not meet the demand, an automatic method of estimating bone age has been called for. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an automatic bone age assessment method that employs pattern classification techniques. The proposed algorithm consists of three modules: a finger segmentation module, a normalized shape model generation module, and a bone age estimation module. We evaluated the performance of the proposed algorithm through a comparative statistical analysis between the bone age measured by experts and that measured by the proposed algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed features are suitable for bone age estimation. Moreover, the proposed algorithm provides excellent assessment performance.
