Amongst the six novels written by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, I maintain, is most likely to be regarded as a comedy. It's because this piece of work sheds light on a lot of people who all have various kinds of foibles and sees them from very positive viewpoints. The characters who are depicted as a caricature may be the most populous; Mr. Collins and Mrs. Bennet represent this group. The characters who are criticized straightforward comes next; Mr. Wickham and Lady de Bourgh are two of them. Lastly come Elizabeth and Darcy and others, who are favourably depicted by the author. Each character has his or her own defects, and yet some defects are regarded as better than others. The heroine and the hero, in spite of their numerous defects, are regarded much highly of, because they become aware of their own defects and reflect themselves very sharply. And their reflections lead directly to their happiness; consequently this novel turns out to be a comedy.
