Despite differences in culture and eras, the Beat icon Jack Kerouac and the haiku master Matsuo Basho penned remarkably similar haiku poetry. They were kindred spirits whose lifestyles, modes of expression and poetic themes bridged the centuries, inextricably linking the two. Through comparative analysis of similar haiku this paper seeks to present thematic and poetic similarities in their haiku. Written in the context of their spiritual beliefs, the work of both poets addresses the themes of nature, the mundane and transformation. Since neither Kerouac nor Basho was content to write strictly within haiku's traditional restrictions, each poet's sense of self sheds insight on universal truths and enables them to rise above the limits of the genre.
