In our previous research, it has been pointed out that the splat morphology has a transition change in the flattening from splash shape to disk one with increasing the substrate temperature regardless of the particle material. Substrate temperature increasing may accompany the change in a shape on substrate surface, because the changing effect is maintained till the substrate is cooled down to the room temperature. However, the cause of the transition in splat morphology by once heating is not specified. In this study, carbon dioxide gas laser was used for laser treatment onto substrate surface, and the influence of surface character change by laser treatment on flattening behavior of thermal sprayed particle was investigated. Laser treated AISI304 steel substrate surface was analyzed precisely by atomic force microscope (AFM). The results obtained revealed that wettability of substrate surface was improved by laser treatment, and correspondingly splat morphology changed to disk shape from splash shape. While the relation of average surface roughness, Ra, of substrate to wettability was not always admitted, the influence of surface morphology in nano-meter scale on splat morphology was clearly suggested.
