In the development stage of diesel engines, we have had major problems with piston combustion chamber bowl rim cracks due to direct injection and higher cylinder pressurization. Much time had been required for measures against the problems, because there was no evaluation method except engine running tests. This time, evaluation method of bowl rim crack reliability test was developed in consideration of piston environment at engine test. Therefore, piston bowl rim crack can be evaluated before engine test, and it can make a contribution to the reduction of engine development period.
