For high-speed small engines which are used for motorcycles or marine boats, intake noise can be more troublesome than exhaust noise. Intake noise includes high-frequency noise, and it may lead to auditory difficulties under running conditions. In this study, the cause of high-frequency noise in an intake noise was experimentally investigated for an intake system with steady flow. An intake-system composed of a cylinder head, an intake manifold and a throttle body were employed, and experiments with air flow were carried out with valve lift and flow velocity varied. Experimental results show that the flow-induced noise hardly receives the effect by throttle body and intake manifold. A kind of abnormal noise was generated for the valve lift of 3mm. It is considered that this noise was caused by the collision of two air flows blowing into the cylinder through two intake ports.
