Because of their harmful effects on the environment, the avoidance of the application of oil based grinding fluids is, nowadays, strongly recommended. In this paper, the ground surface improvements, of the austenitic stainless steel AISI 304, resulting from the application of the cryogenic cooling are presented. Grinding experiments were conducted with a constant value of the stock removal rate under dry, soluble oil and cryogenic cooling modes. Results related to grindability have shown that, while the cryogenic cooling generates the lowest grinding temperature, no significant differences on the levels of the specific grinding force components were observed. Concerning the ground surface integrity, it was found that using the cryogenic cooling, reduces the surface roughness, increases the level of the work hardening and lowers the tensile residual stresses. The realized improvements are thought to be essentially caused by the reduction of the grinding temperature, which lowers the tensile residual stress, and by the cryo-temperature, which favors the material removal by shearing and limits the ground surface damages.
