I lectured on Japanese Haiku to Czech university students who majored in Japanese studies and held a Haiku gathering in the Czech Republic. This paper is a report about this experience. The students studied modern Haiku for the first time although some of them had studied classic Haiku previously. They felt it difficult to understand Haiku at first, but learned to compose Haiku at last. They enjoyed the Haiku gathering and seemed to be very proud when their Haiku got good marks. Most students had never been to Japan, so they could not visualize the seasonal feelings in Japan. Thus I tried to make them appreciate some Haiku which had been composed in their countries by Japanese Haiku poets. The students could relate these works to their life and became more familiar with Haiku. As a result, they were better able to understand Haiku composed in Japan. Then I asked them to compose Haiku in Japanese because I believed that they could deepen their understanding of Haiku through such creative activity. This composition was a great challenge for them. I taught them how to count the syllables in Japanese Haiku and explained the essence of seasonal feelings to them. The Czech students made a great success in composing Japanese Haiku with a fixed form, 5-7-5 syllables. They could realize Haiku feelings and discovered some Czech seasonal words. They became Czech Haiku poets in Japanese.
