• In previous research on colloquial Japanese in the Middle Ages, it has been pointed out that sentential conjunctions expressing cause/reason shifted from hodoni to niyotte, but the relation between the sentential conjunction following the auxiliary verb of the first clause and the nature of the following clause has not been studied in depth. In this article, I examine in which contexts hodoni has been replaced by niyotte, paying attention to the relationship between the two clauses conjoined, and that between the auxiliary verb of the first clause and the conjunction.
