It is well-known that α-Brass cold worked causes hardening by annealing at the temperature lower than the recrystallizing temperature. But the mechanism of the hardening has not been clear, because the hardening occurs in the single phase alloy which, it is considered, has no cause of hardening. The author investigated the hardening phenomena of α-Brass from the standpoint of themodynamics, by the Sykes's method measuring specific heat, and obtained following results; (1) Hardening phenomena of 70-30 Brass is accompanied with exothermic reaction and does not appear under the critical degree of cold work. As the degree of cold work increases, the heat of exothermic reaction increases and occurs in two steps, and also the variation of hardness after cold work has the same tendency as the heat of reaction. (2) As Zn coutent in the Brass increases, the heat of exothermic reaction increases and the temperature of its reaction falls. These results can not be explained by the mechanism in which the variation of α-β solubildty limit is taken into consideration. (3) The larger the grain size of the above mentioned Brass, the smaller the heat of exothermic reaction and the hardenability. So that the influence of the grain size on the hardenability of the alloy is considerably remarked and very interesting. So we shall inves tigate the relation between the glain size and the hardenability of the Brass in future.
