Transplants of Carissa Carandas L. were kept at selected study sites of Varanasi city over a period of 2 years. Plant health was assessed by measuring eight growth indices including height, basal diameter, number of branches, number of leaves, leaf area, canopy height, canopy area and biomass (leaf, shoot, root, and total). Changes in plant parameters were compared with the status of ambient air quality. The transplants were affected differently at different zones depending upon the level of air pollution in the area. Although the existing air pollution load reduced total plant biomass, the functional importance shifted from below to above ground plant parts where foliage assume predominance. The study shows acclimation potential of C. carandas plants against the imposed pollution stress.
