A purpose of this thesis is to consider characteristics of compound nouns of Ainu based on animal names. In Chapter 1, I survey compound nouns of animal names in Ainu and show that they mainly consist of three types, ''a form of an intransitive verb+noun'' type, ''a form of an intransitive verb'' type, and ''noun+noun'' type. In Chapter 2, I narrow down a focus to ''a form of an intransitive verb+noun'' type and ''noun+noun'' type in particular, and I analyze and classify meaning relations with the front part (modifier) and the back part (head) in the inside of compound nouns. In Chapter 3, I consider mutual relations of three compound noun types. And I show that ''a form of an intransitive verb+noun'' type and ''a form of an intransitive verb'' type may hold a strong correlation, but ''noun+noun'' type may not have correlation with them, therefore, ''noun+noun'' type may be formed by an morphological rule of its own. In Chapter 4, I speak a conclusion to here and problem in the future in this study.
