Hachigatsu-odori are dances with music sung alternately by men and women and punctuated by drums. This study is based on fieldwork data from Shiromaeda, Kasari-cho, in the northern part of the Amami Oshima island. My attempt has been to clarify how the dances are performed by the villagers as an integrated experience and have their own value and meaning in the people's folklore. A focus primarily on texts has revealed the following : 1. the anthologies as the records and references of oral tradition; the introduction of the anthologies made in Shiromaeda and their meanings; 2. the ways references are made to the texts in the usual consciousness of the people; the prescriptive conjunctions of the verses ("narabe") in the texts; 3. the conjunction of verses in actual performance; the imagination and ways of choosing verses in tracing a locus of association. These various components are interconnected in the consciousness of the people and the experience of the dances, and they make the Hachigatsu-odori more meaningful and dynamic to the people in Shiromaeda.
