The tide of privatisation spread to many countries throughout the world during the 1980s, resulting in significant changes in the structures of state-owned and public-owned enterprises. This paper, whose theme concerns the performance of privatised corporations, puts forward the idea that the introduction or establishment of a business management system has contributed to their improved performance. In this research, first, studies made in the United Kingdom regarding the evaluation of the performance of privatised corporations are traced and discussed. This discussion is based on a recently published book by Martin and Parker, entitled The Impact of Privatisation. Second, recent papers suggest that any performance improvement of a privatised enterprise presupposes the introduction of a new management system within the enterprise to accompany the transfer of corporate assets from state to private ownership. The new management system in this context includes customer- or consumer-oriented goals, a decentralized divisional organization and new working practices. Third, taking up the experience of India as an example of privatisation in a developing country, this paper discusses privatisation programs for state-owned enterprises and state-owned banks. It is pointed out that the success of privatisation in these cases requires the establishment of a management system. My own paper consists of the following sections: (1) Introduction; (2) Performance of Privatised Corporations: A Study in the UK; (3) Achievements of Privatised Corporations and the Role of Business Management; (4) A Privatisation Program in India: The Issue of Business Management; (5) Supplementary Consideration: A Multinationalisation Strategy Matching Privatisation, and (6) Conclusion.
