Industries categorized as 'office services' in industrial classifications are typically regarded as service industries for the purpose of economic analysis. Economic data for these industries is used as an indicator of the shift towards the service economy, or 'softnomics.' Nobuo Isagai argues that office services constitute the mainstay of today's service economy, based on the theoretical premises that service industries represent intangible produce and lack an object of labor. However, these premises do not hold at all when applied to specific aspects of office services, namely: (1) the development and/or expansion of the physical production division or extrapolation thereof; (2) the burgeoning growth of the distribution division; and (3) the declining emphasis on the service division (in the true sense of the term). Considering only current office services, we cannot argue that a shift towards a service economy has occurred, in terms of statistics obtained for all service types within this context and the increasing proportion of office services therein.
