By building on the business analyses of a recession-hit automobile industry, among others, (see the treatises by Michio Kawashima and Mitsuaki Kusahara), this paper aims at introducing a more general application. In particular, our study focuses on the present state of the "restructuring" process wherein middle-and advanced-aged white-collar workers and management-level employes are being dismissed from employment and/or transferred to other jobs. By so doing, this paper will demonstrate that the on-going process of "restructuring"--rather than simply being a measure to cope with business--is largely defined by characteristics typical of a corporate strategy addressed to the 21st century. Stated more precisely, our thesis is that the constructing of a "21st century corporate system" would require, as its precondition, "an employment system fashioned for the 21st century"--that is, that the target and "gut spirit" of the "restructuring process" now under way are to give shape to a new "21st century-type employment system" by dismantling, among others, Japan's conventional system of lifetime employment.
